Women’s Reservation Act Comes into Force, PM Modi Highlights ‘Nari Shakti’

The Women’s Reservation Act, 2023 has officially come into force, marking a historic step in India’s journey towards greater gender equality in politics. The law aims to reserve one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the implementation of the Act and said that “Nari Shakti,” or women power, is a key pillar in building a strong and developed India. He stressed that empowering women in decision-making roles will lead to better governance and inclusive growth.

The Women’s Reservation Act was passed by Parliament in 2023 after years of discussion and debate. It is seen as a major reform that seeks to increase the participation of women in politics, where their representation has remained relatively low compared to men.

With the Act now in force, one-third of the total seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be reserved for women. This also includes seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), ensuring that women from all sections of society get fair representation.

Supporters of the law believe that it will bring a positive change in Indian politics. They argue that more women in leadership positions can lead to better policies, especially in areas like education, health, and social welfare. Women leaders are often seen as more focused on community development and inclusive growth.

At the same time, some experts point out that the full implementation of the Act will take time. The reservation will come into effect after the next delimitation process, which involves redrawing the boundaries of constituencies based on population data. This means that while the law is now active, its impact will be seen in future elections.

The Prime Minister also said that India’s progress depends on the equal participation of women in all fields, including politics, economy, and society. He highlighted various government initiatives aimed at supporting women, such as education programs, financial inclusion schemes, and skill development efforts.

The implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act has been welcomed by many political leaders, social activists, and citizens. It is being seen as a long-awaited move that can help balance gender representation in the country’s political system.

However, challenges remain. Ensuring that women representatives are given real opportunities to participate in decision-making will be important. Experts say that along with reservation, there should also be efforts to support women leaders through training, resources, and a safe political environment.

The coming years will show how this law shapes the future of Indian politics. For now, its implementation marks a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.
