Shehzad Poonawalla Urges BJP to Accept Resignation After First Letter Rejected

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has again asked the party to accept his resignation from all party positions and primary membership after his earlier resignation letter was rejected.

Poonawalla had offered to step down from his position as BJP national spokesperson and from the party's primary membership on July 30. The party had asked him to reconsider his decision.

In a letter shared on Monday, Poonawalla said he was grateful that the BJP had initially refused to accept his resignation and had given him an opportunity to reconsider. However, after further consideration, he said he had made a final decision to leave his responsibilities within the party.

Poonawalla Cites Personal and Financial Reasons

Poonawalla cited pressing financial and personal circumstances as key reasons behind his decision.

He also indicated that he needs to move toward opportunities in the private sector. His latest statement suggested that recent developments involving certain individuals had reinforced his decision to step away from active party responsibilities.

Poonawalla said the events of recent days had compelled him to stand by his earlier decision despite the BJP's request that he reconsider.

Praise for Modi and Senior BJP Leaders

Despite seeking an exit from the BJP, Poonawalla expressed gratitude and respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior party leaders.

He mentioned BJP president Nitin Nabin along with Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, as well as senior party leader B L Santosh.

His comments indicate that his decision to leave the party is being presented as a personal and professional choice rather than a broad rejection of the BJP leadership.

Poonawalla Removed BJP From His X Bio

Poonawalla had earlier removed any reference to the BJP from his X profile biography, adding to speculation about his political future.

His updated biography describes his religious and cultural views and identifies him as a lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The change came before his renewed push for the party to formally accept his resignation.

Poonawalla's Political Journey

Poonawalla joined the BJP after leaving the Congress in 2017 following disagreements related to the Congress presidential election process.

After joining the BJP, he became one of the party's national spokespersons and regularly represented the party in political debates and public discussions.

He has been a strong supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has frequently criticised Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.

What Happens Next

Poonawalla's latest letter puts renewed pressure on the BJP to formally relieve him from his responsibilities and primary membership.

His decision could mark a significant change in his political career after years of serving as a prominent BJP spokesperson.

The BJP's response to his latest request will determine whether Poonawalla officially ends his association with the party or whether further discussions take place regarding his future.
