Railway Employees to Get 78-Day Bonus: 11.4 Lakh Beneficiaries

Millions of people across India depend on the railway network for daily travel, long-distance journeys and the movement of essential goods. Behind these operations are railway employees who work across stations, tracks, trains, maintenance facilities and administrative departments. Ahead of the festive season, the government has approved a bonus payment for eligible railway staff in recognition of their contribution to the national transport network. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a bonus equivalent to 78 days of wages for eligible non-gazetted railway employees. According to the announcement reported on October 14, 2026, the decision will benefit approximately 11.4 lakh employees, with a total financial outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore. The announcement brings financial relief to eligible railway workers during the festive period, when household spending often increases because of travel, shopping, celebrations and other family commitments. Under the approved arrangement, the maximum bonus payable to an eligible employee is ₹17,951 for the 78-day period.

Who Will Receive the 78-Day Railway Bonus?

The approved bonus is intended for eligible non-gazetted railway employees. These workers perform a wide range of duties that support the daily functioning of Indian Railways, from maintaining tracks and operating trains to managing stations, signalling systems and technical equipment. The categories covered include track maintainers, locomotive pilots, train managers, station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff and other eligible Group C employees. Track maintainers help keep railway tracks in safe operating condition. Locomotive pilots operate trains, while train managers perform duties associated with train operations. Station masters coordinate important station-level activities, and technical teams help maintain railway equipment and infrastructure. Pointsmen and other operational employees also contribute to the movement of trains and the smooth functioning of railway facilities. Ministerial and supervisory staff support administration, coordination and other essential work.

How Much Bonus Will Railway Employees Receive?

Under the Cabinet-approved scheme, eligible employees can receive a bonus equivalent to 78 days of wages, subject to the applicable calculation rules and maximum payment limit. The maximum amount announced for an eligible employee is ₹17,951. This is the payment ceiling reported for the 78-day bonus, rather than a guarantee that every employee will receive the same amount. The overall expenditure approved for the scheme is ₹2,009.61 crore. The amount will cover bonus payments to approximately 11.4 lakh eligible railway employees. For workers and their families, the additional payment can help meet expenses associated with the festive season. Such expenses may include household purchases, travel to visit relatives, education costs and routine family needs. The bonus also represents a form of financial recognition for railway employees whose work supports passenger services, freight movement and the maintenance of railway infrastructure across the country.

Why Has the Government Approved the Railway Bonus?

According to the Cabinet announcement, the bonus has been approved in recognition of the strong performance of railway employees. The payment is also intended to encourage staff to continue improving the performance of Indian Railways. The railway network plays a significant role in India's transport and logistics system. Passenger trains connect cities, towns and rural areas, while freight services transport commodities needed by industries, businesses and households. Keeping this network operational requires coordination among train operating staff, technical personnel, maintenance teams, station employees and administrative workers. Their responsibilities extend beyond passenger movement to include infrastructure upkeep, freight handling and the support services required for railway operations. A performance-linked festive bonus can serve as a financial incentive while acknowledging the contribution of eligible employees. It also provides additional income during a period when many families face higher spending requirements.

Indian Railways Reports Record Freight Loading in 2025-26

The government cited the railway network's performance as part of the context for the bonus decision. According to the reported figures, Indian Railways loaded a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight during 2025-26. The network also carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers during the same financial year. These figures highlight the scale of railway operations in India. Freight services support the transportation of goods across long distances, while passenger services connect people travelling for work, education, healthcare, business and family commitments. Handling such volumes requires extensive coordination between operational staff, station teams, train crews, technical workers and infrastructure maintenance personnel. Freight loading is particularly important for industries that depend on rail transport to move large quantities of goods. Passenger traffic, meanwhile, reflects the railway network's role in everyday mobility and long-distance travel. The bonus announcement recognises employee contributions in this wider operational context. The reported freight and passenger figures describe the network's overall activity and should not be interpreted as individual performance measurements for each employee.

Railway Bonus 2026 Compared With the Previous Year

The government approved a similar 78-day productivity-linked bonus in September 2025. That approval covered 10,91,146 eligible railway employees and involved a total expenditure of ₹1,865.68 crore. For 2026, the approved amount has increased to ₹2,009.61 crore, while the number of beneficiaries has risen to 11,40,770. The comparison shows that the overall financial allocation is higher this year, even though the bonus period and maximum individual payment remain unchanged.

The figures reported for the two years are summarised below.

Particulars

2026

The total outlay has increased by ₹143.93 crore, representing a rise of approximately 7.7% compared with the previous year. The number of employees covered has increased by around 49,600, or approximately 4.5%. These changes indicate that the overall cost of the scheme has grown partly alongside the larger number of eligible beneficiaries. The maximum individual payment, however, remains at the same reported level.

What the Bonus Means for Railway Workers During the Festive Season

The festive period can bring additional financial pressure for working families. Spending may rise because of travel arrangements, household shopping, gifts, celebrations and visits to relatives. For eligible railway employees, the approved payment offers additional income during this period. The extent of the benefit will depend on the amount payable to each employee under the applicable rules. The payment may also contribute to spending in local markets and businesses as families use some of their additional income for essential purchases and festive needs. However, the overall economic effect will depend on how beneficiaries allocate the money and on wider economic conditions. For railway workers, the announcement is particularly relevant because it maintains the 78-day bonus structure while extending coverage to more employees than in the previous year.

Key Details of the 78-Day Railway Bonus

The Union Cabinet's decision covers approximately 11.4 lakh eligible non-gazetted railway employees. The total approved expenditure stands at ₹2,009.61 crore, and the maximum payment reported for an eligible employee is ₹17,951. The bonus covers a broad range of operational, technical, supervisory and ministerial positions. It has been approved in recognition of railway employees' contribution to the network's performance and as an incentive for continued improvement. Compared with 2025, the total allocation and the number of beneficiaries have increased, while the 78-day period and maximum individual payment remain unchanged. The announcement is therefore significant for eligible railway staff preparing for the festive season. For individual employees, the final amount payable will depend on the rules and eligibility conditions applicable to their category.
