PM Modi's Seychelles Visit Set to Boost Defence, Security and Strategic Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a three-day state visit to Seychelles, a trip expected to significantly strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of defence, maritime security, development cooperation, and regional partnership. The Prime Minister will attend Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour and hold high-level talks with the country's leadership.

Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles Rohit Rathish described the visit as a "historic milestone", saying it would provide fresh momentum to the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Defence and Security Cooperation in Focus

Ahead of the Prime Minister's arrival, High Commissioner Rohit Rathish said defence and security cooperation would be one of the key outcomes of the visit.

He noted that India and Seychelles have built a strong partnership over the years based on mutual trust, shared democratic values, and cooperation in maintaining peace and stability across the Indian Ocean Region.

According to Rathish, both countries are expected to deepen collaboration in maritime security, defence capacity building, coastal surveillance, and regional security initiatives during the visit.

He expressed confidence that the visit would open a new chapter in bilateral defence cooperation.

A Relationship Built Over Centuries

Highlighting the historical connection between the two countries, the Indian envoy said India and Seychelles share cultural and historical ties dating back nearly 250 years.

He said both nations are connected not only through diplomatic relations but also through people-to-people ties, shared democratic principles, and longstanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

According to the High Commissioner, these common values continue to serve as the foundation of the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

Development Projects Expected

The visit is also expected to witness the inauguration of several development projects supported by India.

Rathish said projects related to civil infrastructure as well as defence and security cooperation are likely to be unveiled during the Prime Minister's visit.

Over the years, India has assisted Seychelles through infrastructure development, healthcare, education, digital connectivity, capacity building, and maritime security initiatives.

Officials believe the new projects will further strengthen India's role as one of Seychelles' key development partners.

Golden Jubilee National Day Celebrations

Prime Minister Modi has travelled to Seychelles as the Guest of Honour for the country's Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations, marking 50 years of national independence.

The celebrations will also showcase the close friendship between the two countries.

As part of the event, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces and two Indian Navy warships will participate in the ceremonial parade, reflecting the strong defence and maritime partnership that India and Seychelles have developed over the years.

Their participation also highlights India's continued commitment to ensuring peace, security, and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

Strengthening Maritime Partnership

Maritime cooperation remains one of the strongest pillars of India-Seychelles relations.

Both countries regularly cooperate on maritime surveillance, anti-piracy operations, disaster response, search-and-rescue missions, and capacity building.

Given Seychelles' strategic location in the western Indian Ocean, strengthening maritime security cooperation has become increasingly important for ensuring safe sea lanes and regional stability.

India has consistently supported Seychelles in enhancing its maritime capabilities through training, equipment, and defence cooperation.

Comprehensive Bilateral Talks Planned

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Seychelles' leadership are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation.

The discussions will likely cover defence, trade, investment, climate change, renewable energy, digital connectivity, healthcare, education, tourism, and regional security.

The leaders are also expected to exchange views on important regional and international developments affecting the Indian Ocean and broader Indo-Pacific region.

Officials from both countries hope the visit will lead to new agreements and strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.

A New Chapter in India-Seychelles Relations

Prime Minister Modi's visit is widely viewed as an important step in expanding India's engagement with island nations in the Indian Ocean.

As both countries seek to strengthen defence collaboration, accelerate development projects, and deepen strategic cooperation, the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to one of India's oldest and most trusted partnerships in the region.

With shared democratic values, growing economic cooperation, and a common commitment to regional peace and security, India and Seychelles are expected to further elevate their bilateral relationship during this historic visit.
