PM Modi Meets Semiconductor CEOs, Calls for Early Leadership in Emerging Technologies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met leading semiconductor industry CEOs on September 16 and stressed the need for close cooperation between the government and industry to strengthen India’s technology ecosystem.

Modi highlighted India’s talent, technology adoption and infrastructure and called for greater industry participation in skilling, research and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

He said India should aspire to become one of the early leaders in emerging technologies. Modi also highlighted India’s target of training one crore people in AI and said the country’s talent pool, combined with global industry experience, could create new opportunities.

Focus on Semiconductor Growth

Government-industry cooperation was a major focus of the meeting. Modi invited semiconductor companies to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures that could help strengthen the sector.

Industry representatives discussed developments in semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, research and development, talent development and supply-chain capabilities.

Several companies are already carrying out R&D activities in India or have plans to expand their work. Industry participants also expressed interest in joining India’s semiconductor talent development programme.

India’s Semiconductor Talent and Supply Chain

Semiconductor companies highlighted India’s growing pool of skilled professionals and the opportunities available in areas such as precision manufacturing, product design, quality systems and advanced manufacturing.

The discussions also pointed to preparations for new projects under Semicon 2.0 as India seeks to expand its semiconductor ecosystem.
