PM Narendra Modi Begins Six-Day Visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand to Boost Indo-Pacific Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday began a six-day diplomatic visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, where he will hold high-level bilateral meetings, strengthen strategic partnerships, engage with business leaders and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

The visit, scheduled from July 6 to July 11, is aimed at enhancing India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, and commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

In his departure statement, PM Modi said the three-nation tour reflects India's growing engagement with countries across the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean.

"My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean, respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision as well as our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific," the Prime Minister said.

First Stop: Indonesia

Prime Minister Modi will visit Indonesia from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this will be PM Modi's fourth visit to Indonesia and his first bilateral visit since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

During his stay in Jakarta, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Prabowo to review cooperation in key sectors, including trade, defence, maritime security, connectivity and regional collaboration.

PM Modi will also address the Indian diaspora and later travel to Yogyakarta to visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple Complex, highlighting the centuries-old cultural and civilisational ties between India and Indonesia.

Second Leg: Australia

From Indonesia, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Melbourne, Australia, from July 8 to 10 at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The visit will include bilateral discussions between the two leaders on expanding cooperation in defence, trade, technology, education, critical minerals and regional security.

PM Modi will also meet Governor-General Sam Mostyn AC during his visit.

One of the major highlights will be the India-Australia CEOs Forum, where the Prime Minister will address leading business executives from both countries and discuss investment opportunities and economic cooperation.

He will also interact with the Indian community in Australia, which continues to play an important role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Historic Visit to New Zealand

After completing the Australia visit, PM Modi will travel to New Zealand from July 10 to 11 at the invitation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

The visit is historic as it marks the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in nearly 40 years.

In Auckland, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with Prime Minister Luxon covering trade, commerce, defence, education and people-to-people ties.

The leaders are expected to review progress made in bilateral relations over the past two years and explore new opportunities for cooperation.

The Prime Minister will also meet prominent business leaders and sports personalities before addressing a large gathering of the Indian diaspora.

Focus on Indo-Pacific and Strategic Partnerships

The three-nation visit reflects India's growing focus on strengthening strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

Through meetings with political leaders, business communities and the Indian diaspora, the visit aims to deepen cooperation in areas including:

  • Trade and investment
  • Maritime security
  • Defence collaboration
  • Digital economy
  • Supply chains
  • Education and innovation
  • Cultural and people-to-people exchanges

The government believes these engagements will further reinforce India's role as a key partner in maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
