Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration officials have uncovered an alleged food-label manipulation operation at a warehouse in Navi Mumbai, where nearly 5,000 cartons of packaged products were reportedly found with altered information. The investigation found that expiry dates, manufacturing details and nutrition labels had allegedly been removed and replaced on products associated with several major food companies. Officials also reportedly discovered chemicals that were allegedly used to erase original dates, along with machines believed to have been used to print replacement information.

Altered Nutrition Labels Found

The investigation also focused on allegedly modified nutrition labels. Officials reportedly found a Kurkure packet carrying changed ingredient, calorie and serving-size information. Maggi cartons marked as products of India were also found among the stock.

Tukaram Mundhe On Public Trust

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe strongly criticised the alleged practice, stressing that expiry dates and nutritional information are important promises made to consumers. He said deliberately manipulating such information goes beyond a simple regulatory violation and amounts to a breach of public trust.

Export Food Products Under Investigation

Authorities said the products found at the warehouse were intended for export, although the specific destination countries were not immediately clear. The case has raised concerns over food safety, accurate packaging information and accountability throughout the food supply chain.
