Musk Targets Ambani Again Over Reliance, BJP Donations and Starlink

Elon Musk has intensified his public dispute with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani by sharing media reports concerning alleged connections between Reliance-linked businesses and political campaigning in India. The latest development has brought renewed attention to political donations, the country’s telecommunications market and the delayed launch of Starlink’s satellite broadband services. On Saturday, October 10, Musk shared screenshots of two older media reports on X. One was an Al Jazeera report published in 2022 that examined the alleged role of a Reliance-funded company in supporting campaigns associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Facebook. The other was an archived Indian Express report from 2024 concerning political donations reportedly made by Qwik Supply through electoral bonds. The developments have brought three major issues into focus: Musk’s allegations about competition in India’s telecom sector, the political donation reports he shared, and the government’s position on licensing satellite communication providers.

Musk Shares Reports About Alleged Reliance Links to BJP Campaigns

In his latest post, Musk shared a screenshot of an Al Jazeera investigation titled “How a Reliance-funded firm boosts BJP’s campaigns on Facebook.” The report, published in 2022, examined allegations concerning a company described as being funded by Reliance and its reported involvement in supporting political campaigns on social media. Musk also shared an archived report from The Indian Express published in 2024 about Qwik Supply and political contributions made through electoral bonds. According to the report cited in the supplied coverage, the company donated Rs 385 crore to the BJP and Rs 25 crore to the Shiv Sena. The reports have returned to public attention because of Musk’s ongoing criticism of the Indian telecom regulatory process and his claims that established business interests may be limiting competition in the satellite internet market.

Why Musk Is Criticising Mukesh Ambani

The latest exchange is part of a wider disagreement over the introduction of satellite internet services in India. Musk believes his company should be allowed to compete in the Indian market after completing the necessary regulatory process. In an earlier post on X, Musk directly addressed Mukesh Ambani using the sarcastic phrase “Prime Minister Ambani.” He suggested that powerful business interests were seeking to preserve their position in the Indian market and questioned whether Ambani would support allowing Starlink to compete with existing services. Musk’s comments reflect his broader argument that competition in satellite communications should not be restricted in favour of established companies. He has alleged that certain influential business groups want to maintain their dominance, although these claims have not been established as facts.

Musk Says Starlink Could Improve Internet Access in Remote Areas

Musk has repeatedly presented Starlink as a way to extend internet access to locations that are difficult to serve through traditional telecommunications infrastructure. Satellite broadband can potentially connect users in mountainous regions, isolated settlements and other places where laying fibre-optic cables or constructing extensive mobile networks may be challenging. Such services can also provide an alternative connection when conventional communications infrastructure is damaged. In his posts, Musk argued that a lack of internet connectivity limits educational opportunities for children and makes it harder for small businesses to reach customers beyond their local markets. He said Starlink could help address these challenges by providing access in underserved areas.

Government Rejects Claims of a Telecom Monopoly

The Indian government has rejected suggestions that the country’s licensing framework is being selectively applied to prevent one company from entering the market. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said India does not permit monopolies in any sector. He explained that the government’s objective is to make a range of technologies and services available so consumers can choose the option that best meets their needs. Speaking during the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Scindia said the Department of Telecommunications follows a technology-neutral approach. According to the minister, the government’s responsibility is to facilitate a range of services and allow customers to select their preferred provider within the applicable regulatory framework.

Three Companies Have Received Satellite Communication Licences

Scindia said three companies had secured satellite communication licences: Musk’s Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite venture Jio Satcom and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb. The minister said receiving a licence does not automatically mean a company can immediately begin commercial operations. Providers must also fulfil applicable security conditions and other regulatory milestones. He added that the assignment of satellite spectrum would depend on the government’s decision regarding the relevant pricing framework. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications were, according to his remarks, close to a final decision on the pricing regime for satellite spectrum. This process is important because satellite communication services require access to suitable spectrum and must operate within rules designed to manage technical, security and regulatory concerns.

What Is the Role of Reliance Jio in the Dispute?

Reliance Jio is a major player in India’s telecommunications industry, while Jio Satcom is its satellite communication venture. Its planned participation in satellite services has become part of the wider debate over how the market should develop. Musk’s criticism has centred on whether Starlink will be able to compete on fair terms with companies that already have an established presence in India. He has argued that satellite internet should be available to consumers without unnecessary barriers to entry. At the India Mobile Congress, Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani declined to comment on the ongoing dispute. He said the company was focused on delivering value to Indian consumers.

Congress Criticised as Starlink Debate Becomes Political

Scindia also commented on the Congress party’s position during the broader political debate surrounding Musk and Starlink. He referred to exchanges between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Musk on X and criticised what he described as inconsistency in the party’s stance. According to the minister, Congress had previously raised concerns about a company receiving a licence and was now questioning why Starlink had not been granted the permissions required to begin operations. These remarks represented Scindia’s political assessment of the opposition’s position. They were separate from the technical and regulatory questions concerning satellite spectrum, security conditions and commercial authorisation.
