Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case: Police Move Supreme Court Against Sonam Raghuvanshi's Bail

Meghalaya Police have approached the Supreme Court seeking an immediate stay on the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The State argued that allowing the bail order to remain in force could create the possibility of the accused absconding before the trial progresses.

The matter was mentioned before a vacation bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the Meghalaya government. After hearing the request for urgent listing, the bench agreed to hear the matter on July 3, 2026.

The appeal comes just days after the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court order granting bail to Sonam on procedural grounds related to her arrest.

Why the High Court Granted Bail

The Meghalaya High Court had dismissed the State's challenge to the bail order after finding that the police failed to properly communicate the grounds of Sonam Raghuvanshi's arrest, which is a constitutional safeguard guaranteed to every arrested individual.

Justice W. Diengdoh observed that the document provided by the investigating agency contained allegations that were unrelated to the case and reflected a serious lack of application of mind. The court held that such defects affected the legality of the arrest itself and justified the grant of bail.

The High Court rejected the prosecution's argument that the discrepancy was merely a clerical or typographical error. According to the judgment, the error was significant enough to undermine the legal validity of the arrest procedure.

At the same time, the court clarified that its findings were limited only to the arrest procedure and did not express any opinion regarding the investigation, evidence, or the merits of the criminal case.

Meghalaya Police Challenge the Bail Order

Before the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the mistake in the arrest document was only a typographical error and should not become the basis for granting bail in such a serious criminal case.

The State submitted that Sonam Raghuvanshi was fully aware of the allegations against her and therefore suffered no actual prejudice because of the procedural defect. The Meghalaya Police also expressed concern that she could evade the legal process if released on bail.

The Supreme Court will now decide whether the High Court's bail order should remain in force while the legal challenge continues.

Background of the Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case

The case relates to the death of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman who travelled to Meghalaya with his wife Sonam for their honeymoon in May 2025.

The couple reportedly went missing on May 23 while visiting the scenic Sohra (Cherrapunji) region. After an extensive search operation, Raja Raghuvanshi's body was recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, triggering a high-profile murder investigation.

According to the prosecution, Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly conspired with hired attackers to kill her husband. Investigators claim the conspiracy was planned with the help of her alleged associate Raj Kushwaha and was motivated by financial gain.

The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and the criminal trial is still pending.

What Happens Next?

The Supreme Court's upcoming hearing will determine whether Sonam Raghuvanshi's bail should be stayed pending further proceedings. The decision could also clarify the legal significance of procedural lapses during an arrest, particularly in serious criminal cases.

The case continues to draw nationwide attention because of its sensational allegations, the legal debate over constitutional safeguards during arrest, and the ongoing investigation into one of India's most widely discussed murder cases.
