76-Year-Old Kerala Man Sentenced to 13 Years in 1988 Bank Robbery

A decades-old criminal case in Kerala has reached a significant legal conclusion after a 76-year-old man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his alleged role in a bank robbery that took place nearly four decades ago. The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kalpetta sentenced Kollam native Abdul Samad in connection with the Kerala bank robbery case involving the Nallurnad Service Cooperative Bank in Wayanad. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 on him. If Samad fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional 10 months in prison, according to the court order.

Robbery Took Place in January 1988

The case dates back to the early hours of January 8, 1988, when a six-member gang allegedly targeted the cooperative bank in Nallurnad. According to the prosecution, the group arrived at the bank in a car and broke open the locks before entering the premises. The robbers then removed a safe from the bank and took away valuables and cash. The stolen property reportedly included nearly one kilogram of gold ornaments and Rs 5,544 in cash. The incident later became one of the long-running criminal cases in the area, with investigators pursuing the identities and whereabouts of the people allegedly involved.

Two People Attacked During Robbery

The prosecution told the court that two people reached the bank after hearing noises coming from the premises. According to the case presented before the court, the two individuals were attacked by members of the gang using a crowbar. The incident added a serious element to the 1988 bank robbery investigation, as authorities examined not only the alleged theft but also the violence reported during the break-in. Investigators subsequently collected evidence and statements from people connected with the case.

Four Accused Were Convicted in 1993

The legal proceedings in the case stretched across several decades. Four accused persons identified as Subair, Suresh Babu, Alikkutty and Naseer were arrested during the original investigation. They were subsequently sentenced in 1993. Another accused, O K Babu, remained absconding for many years. He eventually surrendered before the court in 2017 and was later sentenced in the case. The prosecution continued to pursue the remaining accused as investigators worked to bring the long-pending case to a conclusion.

Abdul Samad Arrested in 2024

Abdul Samad, who is now 76, was arrested by police in October 2024, more than 36 years after the robbery. Following his arrest, he remained in judicial custody while facing trial. His arrest brought another chapter to the long-running bank robbery case, which had remained active despite the passage of decades. The court proceedings involved a detailed examination of evidence collected during the investigation as well as testimony from witnesses.

Court Examined Around 40 Witnesses

The court heard evidence from around 40 witnesses during the trial. The prosecution also submitted 166 documents and 21 material objects that had been seized during the investigation and recorded under the relevant seizure documentation. The large volume of evidence reflected the age and complexity of the case, with investigators having to rely on material gathered during the original probe along with subsequent investigative developments. The court examined the evidence before reaching its decision to sentence Samad.

Investigation Was Handled by Multiple Agencies

The initial investigation into the Nallurnad Service Cooperative Bank robbery was conducted by the Mananthavady police. The investigation was later transferred to the District CBCID, which continued examining the case and the involvement of individuals who had not yet been brought before the court. The involvement of the CBCID helped keep the case under investigation even as several years passed after the original incident. The case eventually returned to the judicial process following Samad's arrest in 2024.

Court Announces 13-Year Sentence

Additional District and Sessions Court Judge L Jayavanth sentenced Abdul Samad to 13 years in prison. Along with the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 16,000. The court order states that Samad will have to serve another 10 months in prison if he fails to pay the fine. The sentence marks the latest development in the Wayanad robbery case, which began with the bank break-in in 1988 and continued through arrests, convictions, an absconding accused's surrender and the eventual arrest of Samad.

Why This Case Took Decades to Conclude

The case demonstrates how a criminal investigation can continue for decades when some accused persons remain untraced or absconding. Several accused were convicted relatively soon after the incident, but the legal process involving other suspects continued for years. The surrender of O K Babu in 2017 and the arrest of Abdul Samad in 2024 were important developments that brought the remaining accused into the judicial process. With the latest sentencing, another major stage of the decades-old bank robbery case has now been completed.

What Happened in the 1988 Bank Robbery?

The robbery occurred at the Nallurnad Service Cooperative Bank in Wayanad during the early hours of January 8, 1988. Police said a six-member gang arrived in a car, broke the bank's locks and entered the premises. The robbers allegedly took away a safe containing nearly one kilogram of gold ornaments and Rs 5,544 in cash. Two people who arrived after hearing the noise were allegedly attacked with a crowbar. The investigation eventually resulted in several arrests and convictions, while proceedings against other accused continued for years.

A Long-Running Case Reaches Another Milestone

The latest verdict brings renewed attention to the Kerala bank robbery that remained in the legal system for almost four decades. The prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor E R Santhosh Kumar. The extensive evidence presented during the trial included witness testimony, documentary records and material objects collected during the investigation. The sentencing of Abdul Samad is the latest judicial development in a case that began with a night-time bank break-in in 1988 and continued through multiple stages of investigation and court proceedings. The case also highlights the continued legal pursuit of accused persons even when a criminal investigation remains unresolved for many years.
