India's First Hydrogen Train Completes 120 kmph Trial Run, Boosting Green Rail Transport

India has achieved a major milestone in sustainable transportation as its first hydrogen-powered train successfully completed a high-speed trial run, reaching 120 kmph on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The successful test brings Indian Railways one step closer to introducing hydrogen-powered passenger train services and reducing carbon emissions across the country's rail network.

The trial was conducted as part of the final phase of testing before the train enters commercial operations. Railway officials said the performance demonstrated that the train met key operational and safety requirements, including speed, stability, braking performance, and overall system reliability.

Major Step Towards Green Mobility

The hydrogen-powered train represents one of Indian Railways' most ambitious clean energy projects. Unlike conventional diesel trains, the hydrogen train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water vapour as a by-product. This makes the train virtually emission-free and supports India's long-term goal of reducing pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.

The project is part of the government's broader strategy to modernise railway infrastructure while promoting environmentally friendly transportation technologies.

Designed and Built in India

India's first hydrogen train has been designed and manufactured domestically as part of the country's push for indigenous railway technology. The train was built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, showcasing India's growing capability in developing advanced rail systems.

The hydrogen fuel required for operations is supplied through a dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility established at Jind in Haryana, ensuring smooth operation during trials and future passenger services.

Successful High-Speed Testing

During the latest trial, the train achieved a top speed of 120 kmph, successfully completing its scheduled testing programme on the Jind–Sonipat route.

Engineers closely monitored several technical parameters throughout the journey, including braking efficiency, ride stability, passenger safety systems, vibration levels, and overall mechanical performance.

Officials described the successful trial as an important achievement before commercial deployment.

Joining the Global Hydrogen Rail Network

With the successful completion of advanced trials, India is moving closer to joining a select group of countries already operating hydrogen-powered trains, including Germany, Japan, China, and Sweden.

Hydrogen-powered rail systems are increasingly being adopted worldwide because they offer a cleaner alternative to diesel locomotives while maintaining high operational efficiency.

The technology is considered especially useful on railway routes where full electrification is not practical or economically viable.

Benefits of Hydrogen Trains

Hydrogen-powered trains provide several environmental and operational advantages over conventional diesel trains.

They significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, operate more quietly, and lower long-term fuel dependence. Since hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity onboard, the trains can operate without overhead electric lines on many routes.

The adoption of hydrogen technology is expected to support India's commitment to achieving cleaner transportation and sustainable infrastructure development.

Commercial Launch Expected Soon

Following the successful completion of the latest high-speed trial, Indian Railways is expected to complete the remaining technical evaluations and regulatory approvals before introducing the train into passenger service.

Officials believe the hydrogen train project will serve as a model for future clean-energy railway initiatives and could eventually expand to additional routes across the country.

The successful trial demonstrates India's growing technological capability in green transportation while reinforcing its commitment to building a modern, sustainable, and environmentally responsible railway network.
