India Ranks Third in Global Airpower, IAF Stays Ahead of China's Air Force

India has secured the third position globally in the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) Global Air Powers Rankings 2026, reinforcing its growing strength in military aviation. The rankings place India behind only the United States and Russia when airpower is assessed at the country level.

The latest assessment also highlights the Indian Air Force's (IAF) continued operational strength, with the service branch ranking sixth globally, ahead of China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) for the fifth consecutive time since 2022.

Why India Ranks Third by Country but Sixth Overall

The WDMMA evaluates military aviation strength in two different ways. While countries are ranked based on their combined military aviation capabilities, individual service branches are also assessed separately.

Since the United States' military aviation is divided into separate branches—including the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Marine Corps—each receives an individual ranking. This places the IAF sixth overall behind these American branches and the Russian Air Force.

However, when all U.S. military aviation assets are counted together as one country, India moves up to the third position worldwide.

IAF's Operational Strength Boosts Global Ranking

According to the WDMMA, the Indian Air Force operates a fleet of 1,716 aircraft, making it one of the world's largest and most capable air forces.

The fleet includes 542 fighter aircraft across multiple platforms, while helicopters account for 498 aircraft, representing nearly one-third of the fleet. Transport aircraft, surveillance systems, and support platforms further strengthen India's operational capabilities.

The IAF's ability to conduct missions across diverse environments—from the Himalayan region to the Indian Ocean—has been identified as one of its major strengths. Regular multinational military exercises and combat readiness have also contributed to its high global standing.

Modernisation and Indigenous Defence Systems Strengthen the IAF

India's investment in advanced defence technologies has significantly improved its airpower capabilities.

The deployment of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), along with the S-400 Triumf air defence system, has enhanced airspace surveillance and response capabilities.

Indigenous defence projects, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra air-to-air missile, have further strengthened the country's self-reliance and operational readiness. New electronic warfare systems, sensors, and network-centric capabilities continue to modernise the Indian Air Force.

China Has More Aircraft, but Numbers Are Not Everything

Although China's People's Liberation Army Air Force operates more than 3,700 aircraft, significantly outnumbering India's fleet, the WDMMA rankings emphasise that overall capability is determined by far more than fleet size.

The rankings assess factors such as aircraft diversity, mission readiness, logistics, specialised platforms, training, and long-term sustainability rather than relying solely on numerical strength.

As a result, the Indian Air Force continues to rank ahead of the PLAAF despite China's larger inventory.

How WDMMA Calculates Global Airpower Rankings

The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft uses its proprietary TruVal Rating (TvR) system to evaluate military aviation capabilities.

Instead of counting aircraft alone, the methodology considers fleet composition, aircraft modernisation, logistical support, specialised mission aircraft, aerial refuelling capability, transport fleets, pilot training, domestic defence production, and the ability to sustain modern combat operations.

This comprehensive evaluation is designed to provide a more accurate measure of an air force's real operational effectiveness.
