India Assures Fuel Security With Strong Oil and Gas Reserves

The Indian government has assured citizens that there is no immediate fuel supply crisis in the country despite growing tensions in the Middle East and rising global oil prices. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India currently has enough crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) reserves to last for around 69 days, along with 45 days of LPG stock.

The statement comes at a time when global energy markets remain unstable because of conflict risks involving Iran and concerns about oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Since India imports most of its crude oil needs from foreign countries, any disruption in global supply routes creates concern about fuel prices and energy security.

Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit, Puri said the government has successfully managed the situation so far and ensured there have been no fuel shortages anywhere in the country. He also stated that LPG production has been increased sharply from around 35,000-36,000 tonnes per day to nearly 54,000 tonnes per day to maintain stable cooking gas supplies.

The reassurance is important because rising oil prices can quickly affect daily life. Higher fuel costs often increase transportation expenses, food prices, electricity costs, and inflation. Many countries around the world are currently facing pressure because of unstable energy markets linked to Middle East tensions.

India is one of the world’s largest energy consumers and imports more than 90 percent of its crude oil needs. Because of this heavy dependence on imports, the government closely monitors global oil markets and maintains strategic reserves to prepare for emergencies.

The country’s strategic petroleum reserve system was created to help India handle sudden disruptions in global supply. These underground storage facilities are located in places such as Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Padur. Along with reserves maintained by oil companies, India has built an important emergency fuel buffer over the years.

However, even though supplies remain stable for now, experts say the financial pressure on oil companies is increasing. State-run fuel retailers have reportedly been absorbing major losses because petrol and diesel prices have remained mostly unchanged despite rising global crude oil costs.

The government has also started encouraging fuel conservation measures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed to citizens to reduce unnecessary fuel use, increase public transport use, and avoid unnecessary foreign travel in order to protect India’s economy and foreign exchange reserves during the current global crisis.

Energy experts say India’s current reserve position offers short-term protection, but long-term challenges could remain if global tensions continue for several months. A prolonged rise in crude oil prices could increase inflation, pressure government finances, and affect economic growth.

The current situation also highlights how deeply global events affect countries far from the conflict zones. Problems in the Middle East can quickly influence fuel prices, transportation costs, and household expenses across India.

For now, the government’s message is aimed at preventing panic and maintaining confidence in the country’s fuel supply system. Officials continue to monitor the international situation closely while preparing for possible future disruptions if geopolitical tensions rise further.
