IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat and Assam; Heatwave to Persist in Uttar Pradesh

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country, including Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat, and Assam, over the next 24 hours. At the same time, Delhi, Chandigarh, and nearby regions are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, while parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to remain under severe heatwave conditions.

The latest forecast highlights the contrasting weather patterns across India as the southwest monsoon advances through many regions while extreme heat continues to affect parts of northern India.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Five States

According to the IMD, widespread rainfall activity is expected in southern, western, and northeastern India.

States likely to receive heavy rainfall include:

Kerala
Coastal and Interior Karnataka
Odisha
Gujarat
Assam

Meteorologists have warned that some districts could witness intense showers that may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, reduced visibility on roads, and temporary traffic disruptions.

Residents living near rivers and hilly regions have been advised to remain alert as localized flooding and landslides cannot be ruled out in vulnerable locations.

Thunderstorms Likely in Delhi and Chandigarh

The weather department has also forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds over Delhi, Chandigarh, and adjoining areas.

The expected rainfall could provide temporary relief from high daytime temperatures but may also result in brief disruptions to road traffic and outdoor activities.

People have been advised to avoid open spaces during lightning activity and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.

Heatwave to Continue in Uttar Pradesh

While several parts of the country prepare for rain, Uttar Pradesh is expected to continue experiencing severe heatwave conditions.

Many districts are likely to record temperatures well above normal, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke.

The IMD has advised residents to:

Stay indoors during peak afternoon hours.
Drink plenty of water and remain hydrated.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing.
Take extra care of children, elderly people, and those with existing health conditions.

Monsoon Progress Across India

The southwest monsoon continues to strengthen over several regions, bringing widespread rainfall to southern and northeastern states.

Weather experts say the advancing monsoon is expected to improve water availability for agriculture, replenish reservoirs, and provide relief to areas that have experienced prolonged dry conditions.

However, heavy rainfall may also increase the risk of flash floods, landslides, and transport disruptions in some regions.

Authorities Urge Public to Stay Alert

Disaster management agencies and local administrations have been advised to remain prepared for possible weather-related emergencies.

Residents in rain-affected states are encouraged to monitor official weather updates and avoid travelling through flood-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, people in heatwave-affected regions should continue following health advisories to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Weather Outlook

India is expected to witness a mix of intense monsoon activity and extreme summer conditions over the coming days.

While heavy rainfall is likely to dominate Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat, and Assam, thunderstorms may bring temporary relief to Delhi and Chandigarh. In contrast, residents of Uttar Pradesh are advised to remain cautious as severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist until temperatures begin to ease.
