IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert Across 10 Tamil Nadu Districts

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 10 districts in Tamil Nadu, raising concerns about flooding, waterlogging, and travel disruptions in several parts of the state. Weather officials said heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are likely over many districts during the coming days as weather systems strengthen over southern India.

According to the IMD forecast, districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram are expected to receive heavy rainfall. The warning is mainly active for May 15 and May 16, when rain activity is expected to become stronger across Tamil Nadu and nearby coastal regions.

The IMD has also warned about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several districts. Officials advised people to stay careful during bad weather conditions, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Weather experts say the current rainfall is linked to atmospheric circulation systems developing over the Arabian Sea and nearby coastal regions. These systems are pulling moisture into Tamil Nadu, increasing the chances of widespread rain and thunderstorms.

In recent days, many districts in Tamil Nadu have already received moderate rainfall. Areas in Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Kanyakumari recorded noticeable rain activity. Officials fear that continued rainfall may increase pressure on drainage systems and lead to temporary flooding in urban areas.

The weather warning comes at an important time for farmers across Tamil Nadu. While rain can help improve water storage and support agriculture, very heavy rainfall can also damage crops, especially in areas where fields become flooded. Farmers are being advised to monitor local weather updates and protect stored crops and farming equipment where possible.

The IMD also warned fishermen to remain cautious because sea conditions may become rough along the Tamil Nadu coast and nearby waters. Strong winds and unstable weather can create dangerous conditions for small fishing boats and coastal operations.

Authorities are expected to stay on alert as the rain system develops further. Disaster management teams and local officials may increase monitoring in vulnerable districts, especially in areas that often face flooding during heavy rain periods.

Tamil Nadu has experienced several extreme weather events in recent years, including floods, cyclones, and intense monsoon rains. These repeated weather changes have increased public concern about climate patterns and the need for stronger disaster preparation systems.

Experts say cities and towns must improve drainage systems, flood management, and emergency planning to handle sudden weather events more effectively. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions remain common problems whenever heavy rain hits urban areas.

The IMD continues to advise people to follow official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Residents are also encouraged to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing near electric poles, trees, or open fields during lightning activity.

While rainfall can provide relief from summer heat and improve water reserves, authorities say safety should remain the top priority. The coming days will be important as Tamil Nadu prepares for another round of heavy rain and unstable weather conditions.
