IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for 23 States, Predicts Intense Monsoon for Next Five Days

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 23 states as the southwest monsoon gains strength across the country. According to the weather department, widespread rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected over the next four to five days, with some areas likely to experience localized flooding and waterlogging.

The IMD has also warned that wind speeds could reach 60 to 75 km/h in several regions.

Multiple Weather Systems Driving Heavy Rainfall

Meteorologists said several active weather systems are influencing India's weather pattern.

A new low-pressure area is developing over the Bay of Bengal, while a cyclonic circulation remains active over eastern Bihar. In addition, a Western Disturbance is expected to impact northwestern India from July 2, increasing rainfall across northern states.

These weather systems are expected to bring widespread monsoon activity from northern India to southern states.

Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh Forecast

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Delhi-NCR over the coming days.

Wind speeds may reach 60–70 km/h, while temperatures are expected to drop to around 31°C, providing relief from the recent heat.

In Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon has fully covered the state. Heavy rain and squally winds of up to 75 km/h are expected in several districts, including Agra, Mathura, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur.

Heavy Rain Expected in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal

Several districts of Bihar, including Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Purnia, are likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 60–65 km/h.

The IMD has also forecast moderate to heavy rain across Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Jamshedpur, with the possibility of rising river levels.

In West Bengal, heavy rain is expected in districts such as Kolkata, Purulia, and Nadia due to the developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal.

Alerts for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan

Heavy rainfall warnings have also been issued for parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Vidisha, and Khandwa, where localized flooding may occur.

Several districts in Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Kota, and Udaipur, are expected to receive heavy rain along with winds reaching 40–50 km/h.

Punjab and Haryana to Receive Rainfall

The approaching Western Disturbance is expected to bring thunderstorms and heavy rain to Punjab and Haryana from July 2.

Districts including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Ambala, and Karnal are expected to witness active monsoon conditions, which could benefit agricultural activities, particularly paddy cultivation.

Mumbai and South India Continue to Receive Rain

Heavy rainfall has already affected Mumbai, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas. A Yellow Alert remains in effect for the city.

Meanwhile, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall, helping lower temperatures across the region.

People Advised to Stay Updated

The IMD has advised residents in affected states to monitor official weather updates, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow instructions issued by local authorities, especially in regions vulnerable to flooding or strong winds.
