Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a National Investigation Agency probe into the recent attack on SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded, Maharashtra.

Sukhbir Badal was attacked with a dagger at Shri Hazur Sahib Gurudwara on August 13. Despite having Z-plus security cover, the attacker managed to approach him and injure his right forearm.

Harsimrat, who is Sukhbir Badal’s wife, described the incident as a serious assassination attempt and urged the Centre to order an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Demand for High-Level NIA Investigation

In her letter, Harsimrat requested that the NIA investigate both the latest attack and an earlier attempt on Sukhbir Badal’s life at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in December 2024.

She said investigators should determine whether the two incidents were connected and whether a wider conspiracy was involved.

Harsimrat also raised questions about possible extremist or foreign links and whether there were any security failures or lapses by public officials.

Similarities Between Two Attacks

Harsimrat highlighted what she described as several disturbing similarities between the two incidents.

According to her, both attacks took place at Sikh religious sites while Sukhbir Badal was engaged in religious service.

She argued that the repeated incidents require an investigation beyond the state level to determine whether there was a coordinated motive behind them.

Security Concerns After Nanded Attack

Sukhbir Badal suffered an injury to his right arm during the Nanded incident. A security personnel who intervened to stop the attacker was also injured.

Harsimrat said the quick response of the security officer prevented the incident from becoming more serious.

She also expressed concern over the security arrangements surrounding Sukhbir Badal despite his Z-plus protection.

Questions Over Punjab Police and Government

Harsimrat questioned the response of the Punjab Police and the state government, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the two incidents deserved closer examination.

She said repeated attacks of this nature could create concerns about political violence and the safety of public figures.

She also argued that such incidents could damage Punjab’s image and affect perceptions of the Sikh community internationally.

Call to Examine Possible Larger Conspiracy

Harsimrat has asked Amit Shah to consider whether the Nanded attack and the 2024 Golden Temple incident were connected.

She wants the proposed investigation to identify anyone involved, examine possible extremist or foreign connections and determine whether any official security failures contributed to the incidents.

The request now puts the focus on the Centre and whether it will order an NIA investigation into the two attacks.
