Nitin Gadkari Launches Barrier-Less Toll System in Delhi

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched a new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll collection system in Delhi, marking a major step toward modernizing India’s highway infrastructure. The new technology aims to reduce traffic congestion, save travel time, and improve the driving experience for millions of commuters across the country.

The MLFF toll system removes the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. Instead of waiting in long lines to pay toll charges, vehicles will now move continuously while cameras and advanced sensors automatically detect registration numbers and collect toll payments digitally. Officials say this system will help reduce traffic jams, fuel waste, and pollution caused by long waiting times at toll booths.

Speaking during the inauguration, Nitin Gadkari said India is moving toward smarter and faster highway systems that match global standards. He explained that the barrier-less toll system would improve efficiency on national highways and make road travel smoother for both private vehicles and commercial transport.

The government has been working for several years to modernize toll collection through FASTag technology. FASTag already helped reduce waiting time by introducing electronic toll payments. However, vehicles still needed to slow down or briefly stop at toll plazas. The new MLFF system is expected to remove even that delay by allowing free-flow movement without physical barriers.

Under the new system, cameras installed above highways will capture vehicle details and automatically deduct toll charges from linked accounts. Vehicles without valid digital payment systems may receive penalties or notices later through official channels. Authorities believe this technology will improve transparency and reduce toll collection disputes.

The launch in Delhi is being viewed as a pilot step before wider expansion across India’s national highway network. If successful, similar systems may soon be introduced in other major cities and highways across the country.

Traffic congestion at toll plazas has remained a major issue in India for years. Long queues often lead to delays, fuel loss, driver frustration, and increased pollution. Heavy commercial vehicles especially face significant time loss during peak travel periods. Experts say the barrier-less system could greatly improve transport efficiency and reduce logistics costs.

The project also supports India’s larger goal of improving infrastructure and strengthening economic growth. Faster transport systems help businesses move goods more quickly, lower fuel consumption, and improve connectivity between cities and industrial areas.

Road safety experts believe the system may also reduce accidents near toll plazas, where sudden braking and lane changes often create risks for drivers. Continuous vehicle movement can improve smoother traffic flow and reduce confusion around toll lanes.

However, the new system may also face challenges during implementation. Some experts say accurate vehicle identification and digital payment management will be extremely important for the project’s success. Authorities will need strong technology systems to prevent errors, missed payments, or privacy concerns.

Many drivers have welcomed the move, saying it could make highway travel faster and less stressful. Commercial transport operators also expect lower delays and better fuel efficiency once the system expands nationwide.

India has been investing heavily in roads, expressways, and transport infrastructure under Nitin Gadkari’s leadership. The government believes better highways and modern technology are essential for economic development and easier public travel.

The launch of the MLFF barrier-less toll system therefore represents more than just a technology upgrade. It reflects India’s broader effort to build smarter infrastructure, reduce travel delays, and create a modern transport network for the future.
