Delhi Protest Assault: Four Arrested After Video Goes Viral

NEW DELHI: A case of alleged violence against demonstrators in the national capital has sparked controversy after a video showing men attacking young protesters circulated widely on social media. Delhi Police arrested four men in connection with the incident, which took place on October 10, 2026, during a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The incident drew attention to the safety of protesters, the conduct of individuals involved in the confrontation and the response of police personnel reportedly present at the scene. CJP alleged that people associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were responsible for the assault. The organisation also questioned why demonstrators were allegedly attacked in front of police officers. The precise circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the individual roles of those involved remain matters for investigation. The Delhi protest assault case has attracted attention because it involves allegations of physical violence, political accusations and questions about how authorities respond when clashes occur during public demonstrations.

What Happened During the October 10 Protest in Delhi?

The incident reportedly took place on DDU Marg in central Delhi, within the jurisdiction of Kamla Market Police Station, during protest-related activities associated with the CJP demonstration. According to reports published on October 11, footage circulating on social media showed a group of men confronting young demonstrators near a roadside iron railing. One man wearing a white shirt appeared to push and kick a young protester, while other individuals were seen restraining and striking another person near the railing. The footage also appeared to show women being pushed or physically handled during the confrontation. The images triggered strong reactions online, with users questioning why the situation was allowed to escalate and whether those present had taken sufficient steps to protect the demonstrators. CJP shared the video and accused individuals it described as BJP-RSS supporters of attacking protesters. The organisation also alleged that a police officer present at the scene appeared to signal towards the person recording the incident.

Viral Video Leads to Police Action and Four Arrests

The viral video became a central element of the case after it was shared by political groups and other social media accounts. Its circulation brought the alleged assault to wider public attention and prompted demands for action against those seen in the footage. Delhi Police took notice of the video and initiated legal proceedings without waiting for a formal complaint, according to reports. Police said no complaint had been received from the alleged victim or another person or organisation at the time of the initial action. Media reports identified the four arrested men as Raman Saini, 50; Vivekanand, also known as Vivek, 32; Kapil Kumar, 27; and Ravinder Singh, also known as Govind Hindu, 35. Saini was reported to be a resident of Pahari Dheeraj in Delhi, while Vivekanand was reported to live in Nangloi. Kapil Kumar was identified as a resident of Ghaziabad, and Ravinder Singh was reported to live in Indirapuram, Uttar Pradesh.

Why Are BJP and RSS Being Mentioned in the Case?

The political dimension of the controversy emerged after CJP publicly alleged that people associated with BJP and RSS were involved in the attack. In its social media post, the party questioned why demonstrators were allegedly assaulted in the presence of police personnel. It also demanded an explanation for what it described as a failure to protect people participating in a peaceful protest. These allegations generated further debate because the demonstration itself was linked to demands for changes in the country's electoral administration. The alleged assault therefore became part of a broader political dispute involving protesters, law enforcement and organisations accused of being connected to the confrontation. Separately, media reports said the arrested men claimed to be members of the Hindu Raksha Dal. The group's leader, Pinky Chaudhary, was reported by The Telegraph to have described the accused as his workers and pledged to protect them. These reports should be distinguished from CJP's allegations regarding BJP and RSS. An alleged association with the Hindu Raksha Dal does not, on its own, establish that BJP or RSS directed or organised the incident.

Delhi Police Response Under Scrutiny After Footage Emerges

The role of the Delhi Police has become another important aspect of the controversy. The footage and accounts published by news organisations raised questions about the actions of officers who were reportedly present when the confrontation occurred. CJP alleged that police personnel did not adequately protect the demonstrators. The organisation also questioned whether officers intervened promptly and whether the people seen attacking protesters were allowed to act without sufficient restraint. Police, meanwhile, took action after the video came to their attention and arrested four men. The reported decision to proceed without a formal complaint was significant because it showed that the authorities were able to initiate legal proceedings on the basis of information available to them. However, the arrests do not automatically resolve questions about police conduct at the scene. Establishing whether officers acted appropriately would require an examination of the full footage, witness accounts, the sequence of events and any available official records.

What Was the CJP Protest About?

The CJP protest was organised around demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Demonstrators raised concerns about the Election Commission's functioning and alleged irregularities associated with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The revision process has become a subject of political debate, with critics questioning how voter names are verified, removed or restored. CJP and other critics have argued that the process raises concerns about electoral fairness and the rights of eligible voters. The Election Commission's role and the allegations surrounding voter-list revisions form a separate issue from the alleged physical assault. Claims about electoral irregularities require their own evidence and assessment; they should not be treated as established solely because they were raised during a protest.
