CJP Withdraws September 5 Delhi Protest After Centre's Assurance

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has withdrawn its proposed protest march scheduled for September 5 in Delhi after receiving assurances from the Centre regarding cases registered against students and protesters during the July demonstrations. The decision came after the Centre told the Supreme Court that it would take steps to withdraw cases connected with the protests held between July 20 and July 25. The development brought a major change to the situation surrounding the planned CJP Protest, which was earlier announced as a large demonstration at India Gate. The organisation had accused the government of failing to honour commitments made during discussions with its representatives and had alleged that cases against student protesters were not being withdrawn as expected. Following the Centre's latest assurance and the Supreme Court's intervention, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das informed the court that the organisation had decided to withdraw its call for the September 5 demonstration.

What Did the Centre Assure the Supreme Court?

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the Centre, through the Delhi Police, along with the governments of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra, had submitted applications seeking the quashing of FIRs associated with the student protests. The Centre also assured the court that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the protest-related events that took place between July 20 and July 25. According to the submission made before the court, these steps were being taken to honour an assurance previously given by the Centre to CJP representatives on July 25. The assurance became an important factor behind the withdrawal of the proposed September 5 Protest.

Supreme Court Takes Note of FIR

The Supreme Court took note of the Centre's submission regarding the cases registered against protesters. The court's decision covered FIRs filed in connection with the demonstrations during the specified period. The development was particularly significant for students who had been facing legal proceedings following the protests. The court directed that cases filed against students in different states and Union Territories in connection with the relevant protest period would be quashed. The court's intervention provided legal clarity on the status of the cases and helped ease the tension between the protesting organisation and the government.

Why Was the India Gate Protest Planned?

The CJP had earlier announced the India Gate Protest for September 5 after alleging that the Centre had failed to provide a written assurance regarding the withdrawal of FIRs against student protesters. The proposed demonstration was planned to begin at India Gate and move towards the Delhi Police Headquarters. The organisation had said that families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide, along with people who were allegedly affected by police action during the July protests, would participate in and lead the demonstration. The proposed march had therefore become a significant point of attention in the ongoing dispute over cases registered during the student demonstrations.

CJP Says Centre's Assurance Led to Decision

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das welcomed the government's response before the Supreme Court and said that the organisation considered it appropriate to withdraw the planned march following the assurances and the court's order. Das also expressed appreciation for the Supreme Court's decision and indicated that the organisation would now look towards implementation of the directions issued by the court. The decision means that the proposed Delhi Protest on September 5 will no longer take place as announced earlier, provided the commitments made before the court are implemented.

Delhi Protest and Student Cases

The development is centred on Delhi, particularly the India Gate area and the Delhi Police Headquarters. The issue also involves cases connected with protests across several states and Union Territories, including Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra. With the Supreme Court taking note of the government's assurance and the CJP withdrawing its planned demonstration, attention will now shift towards the implementation of the court's directions and the withdrawal of the relevant cases. The latest development brings a temporary end to the immediate confrontation over the proposed September 5 march and provides a legal and political pathway for resolving the dispute surrounding the student protests.
