India Holds Firm on US Trade Deal, Seeks Better Terms Before Signing Agreement

India has decided not to rush into a trade agreement with the United States, choosing instead to negotiate for better terms before signing any interim deal. Officials familiar with the negotiations said New Delhi believes it is in a stronger position due to improving exports, a stable economy and expanding trade partnerships with other countries.

Trade discussions between the two nations continued for several months, but negotiators were unable to finalise an interim agreement during the recent visit of senior US trade officials to New Delhi. While both sides had expected progress, differences over tariffs and market access prevented the deal from moving forward.

India Seeks Tariff Advantage Over Competitors

According to officials, one of India's key demands is a tariff advantage over competing manufacturing countries, particularly China. New Delhi also wants assurances that the United States will not introduce additional tariffs after the agreement is signed.

Indian negotiators have maintained that they will not compromise on sensitive sectors such as agriculture, which remains a major source of employment and income for millions of people. The government believes protecting farmers and small businesses remains a priority during any trade negotiations.

The United States has reportedly sought faster trade concessions from India as it prepares to introduce new tariff measures later this month. However, Indian officials say any agreement must provide long-term economic benefits rather than short-term relief.

Strong Economy Gives India Greater Negotiating Power

Analysts believe India's improving economic performance has strengthened its position during the talks. Merchandise exports have increased in recent months despite global uncertainty, while exports to Gulf countries have recovered following disruptions earlier this year.

India has also expanded trade relations beyond the United States. A free trade agreement with the United Kingdom is expected to come into effect soon, while negotiations with the European Union are progressing toward a broader trade pact.

Lower global oil prices have further supported India's economy by reducing import costs and easing inflation pressures. Economists say these developments have given New Delhi greater confidence to continue negotiations without accepting less favourable conditions.

Businesses Await Clarity

Although negotiations remain active, the absence of an agreement has created uncertainty for exporters and businesses in both countries. Indian products currently face existing US tariffs, and any future increase could affect sectors such as textiles, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing exports.

Trade experts believe both governments continue to view each other as important strategic partners and expect discussions to continue despite the current differences.

Negotiations Expected to Continue

Officials from both countries have indicated that dialogue remains ongoing, although no timeline has been announced for reaching an agreement. Analysts say the coming weeks will be important as both sides attempt to bridge differences over tariffs, market access and investment rules.

A successful trade agreement could strengthen economic ties between India and the United States, increase bilateral trade and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
