India Calls for Dialogue and Diplomacy as US-Iran Strikes Deepen West Asia Crisis

India has expressed deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in West Asia following fresh military exchanges between the United States and Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint, calling for immediate de-escalation and emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path toward lasting peace.

In an official statement, the MEA said the recent escalation threatens regional stability, international maritime security, and the uninterrupted flow of global energy supplies.

MEA Calls for Immediate De-escalation

The Ministry said attacks on commercial vessels transiting international waterways have increased tensions across the region and created uncertainty for global trade.

"India is deeply concerned over the recent escalation of tensions in West Asia following attacks on commercial shipping transiting international waterways. Such developments undermine regional peace, security and stability and threaten the uninterrupted flow of global energy supplies and maritime commerce," the MEA said.

India urged all parties to avoid actions that could further intensify the conflict while stressing the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring the safe movement of commercial ships through international sea lanes.

Growing Security Concerns in the Strait of Hormuz

India's statement comes after a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.

Recent incidents reportedly involved a Qatari LNG carrier, a Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker, and another commercial vessel that sustained damage after being struck by an unidentified projectile. The attacks have raised fresh concerns over the safety of shipping through the strategic waterway, which carries nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies.

The security situation further intensified after the United States carried out military strikes targeting multiple Iranian military facilities, saying the operation was aimed at reducing threats to international shipping.

Impact on India's Energy Security

The developments are being closely monitored in New Delhi because India imports a significant portion of its crude oil from Gulf countries. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could affect energy supplies, increase transportation costs, and impact global oil prices.

Reports also indicated that an Indian oil tanker was forced to alter its route after restrictions were imposed on certain shipping corridors, highlighting the growing risks facing commercial vessels operating in the region.

Experts say prolonged instability in the Gulf could have wider economic consequences for India by affecting fuel prices, shipping costs, and international trade.

India Reaffirms Support for Peaceful Resolution

India reiterated its longstanding position that disputes should be resolved through peaceful dialogue rather than military confrontation.

The government said diplomatic engagement remains the most effective way to reduce tensions and restore stability in West Asia. It also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding India's commercial interests and ensuring the safety of Indian nationals and maritime operations in the region.

As tensions continue to evolve, India is expected to remain in close contact with regional partners while monitoring developments that could affect its strategic and economic interests.
