Centre Urges Calm as West Asia Tensions Raise Fuel Concerns

The Indian government has urged citizens not to panic buy petrol, diesel, or cooking gas despite growing tensions in West Asia. Officials have assured the public that fuel supplies across the country remain stable and that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG at present.

The appeal comes at a time when the conflict in West Asia continues to create uncertainty in global energy markets. Rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and other regional powers have increased fears about possible disruptions in oil supply routes, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping passages for crude oil.

India depends heavily on imported crude oil, and a large share of those imports comes from the Gulf region. Because of this, developments in West Asia directly affect India’s fuel security and energy prices. However, the government has repeatedly stated that the country has enough fuel reserves and that refineries are operating normally.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said retail fuel outlets across the country are functioning without disruption. Officials added that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG are available and supply chains continue to work smoothly. Authorities also confirmed that domestic LPG cylinder deliveries remain stable across India.

The government’s warning against panic buying is important because fear-driven purchasing can create artificial shortages even when supplies are sufficient. In recent days, reports from some cities showed increased fuel purchases as people worried about possible price hikes or supply disruptions.

To prevent hoarding and black marketing, authorities have increased monitoring across several states. Enforcement teams have reportedly carried out raids and taken action against illegal fuel storage and misinformation campaigns. Officials said strict action would continue against anyone trying to create panic or profit from public fear.

The Centre has also been taking broader measures to maintain energy stability. Refineries are operating at high capacity, fuel inventories are being closely monitored, and supplies to essential sectors such as hospitals, agriculture, and transportation are being prioritised.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders have also appealed to citizens to use fuel responsibly during this period of global uncertainty. The government has encouraged energy conservation, reduced unnecessary fuel use, and promoted efficient consumption practices to reduce pressure on imports and protect economic stability.

The situation also highlights how deeply global conflicts can affect everyday life in countries far from the battlefield. Even when there is no direct shortage, fears surrounding international crises can influence prices, markets, and public behaviour. Fuel prices are especially sensitive because transportation, food supply chains, industries, and household costs all depend heavily on energy availability.

Experts believe India’s diversified energy planning and emergency reserves are helping the country manage the current situation better than in past global crises. Still, they warn that a prolonged conflict in West Asia could continue to pressure global oil prices and increase economic uncertainty worldwide.
