Gujarat has taken a significant step toward modern governance with the launch of the first phase of Census 2027. The exercise, which began on June 1, is being described as India's first fully digital census and represents a major shift in the way population and housing data are collected. The nationwide population survey is one of the most important administrative activities carried out by the government. Another important innovation is the self-enumeration facility. Citizens can enter their own details through an official online portal instead of waiting for a census worker to visit. The response from residents has already been encouraging. Hundreds of thousands of people have participated in the self-enumeration process, demonstrating growing public confidence in digital government services. The involvement of senior state leaders and administrative officials in the early stages also helped promote awareness and participation.

The second phase of the exercise will take place in February 2027 and will focus on population counting and caste-related data collection. This stage will provide a comprehensive picture of demographic trends across the country. Accurate population figures are essential because they influence planning in areas such as healthcare, education, transportation, housing, and employment. Information gathered during this stage can also help governments identify regional needs and address development gaps more effectively.
